Thanks to Jim Savage for providing this obituary.

John S. Savage

SOUTHERN CHRISTIAN ADVOCATE, dated 31 March 1848, signed by W.H.Crawford.

Died, in Winston county, Miss, December 25, 1847, John S. Savage. He was born in Edgefield dist., professed religion at a camp-meeting near Covington in Newton co. Ga., 15 Oct 1831; and has ever since been a worthy and acceptable member of the M. E. Church. His sufferings were great during his sickness (he died of cancer); but he ever evinced that calm resignation of mind which characterizes the humble Christian. He was not only thoughtful and interested in the cause of Christ and his own eternal welfare, when he saw the cold hands of death would soon usher him into eternity, but from the time of his profession until his death, he so conducted himself that his walk was a practical comment upon the Christian religion. He was an affectionate husband, a kind father, and good citizen. He left a wife and four children to mourn their loss.

Original in the Carolinia Library of the University of South Carolina.  The Methodist Minister (William H. Crawford) who submitted the obituary to the newspaper was a first cousin to James Anderson Savage's wife.  The Reverend Crawford's father Peter Crawford was a brother to Elizabeth "Betty" Shaw Savage's mother Drucilla Crawford Shaw.
