100 and 75 Years Ago

January 3, 1930

A train a mile north of the city killed Arnold Crowson on Sunday morning. Burial was in Poplar Flat Cemetery. Survivors include his wife and 13 children, including twins born in November, among them.

Mr. Milton Woodward, the son of the late Calvin and Jane Woodward, died in Gulfport last week. Funeral and burial was in Gulfport. He was a former County Treasurer of Winston County and had resided in Gulfport for the past two years or so. Survivors include his devoted wife and three children and other relatives, mostly in Winston County.

Mr. M. W. Triplett, 67, whose home was a Loakfoma, fourteen miles northeast of the city, and where he had lived all is life, died at the home of his son, Walter Triplett, here Thursday. Funeral and burial was at Betheden Church and cemetery. He was a member of the Universalist Church and a Mason. Survivors include his wife and four children, Mrs. Laura Frazier, Walter Triplett, Mrs. Chas. Wicker and Raymond Triplett, one brother, A. G. Triplett of Brooksville and one half sister, Mrs. Sallie Ilderton of this county.

Noxapater: Mrs. George Ward and baby of Montrose are guests of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Stokes.

Noxapater: Mrs. Lee Crawford and sons of Kosciusko were visitors here during the holidays as guests in the home of Mrs. Crawford’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Gunn.

Noxapater: Mr. and Mrs. T. J. Shepherd spent the holidays in Tchula, guests of their daughter, Mrs. Lillie Reed and children.

Frank McGee of Meridian spent the weekend here with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. W. McGee north of town.

Our long time friend, Mr. W. W. Coleman, celebrated his 88th birthday on yesterday and in celebrating it he sent the Journal a $5 bill for his supply of 1930 reading matter, which he has been doing for more than thirty years.

W. E. Dempsey visited his son, Dr. Terrill Dempsey, the past week.

Mr. and Mrs. S. L. Woodward of Montreat, N. C. spent the holidays here and in the county with relatives.

Ed Gully of Perkinston spent a few days here with his sisters, Mrs. G. B. Woodward and Mrs. C. W. Townsend.

Among those distant subscribers who have remembered us since the New Year is our good friend, G. R. Foster, of Prague, Okla., who sends in a two-year subscription.

This publication follows his first volume that included excerpts from The Winston Signal for the years 1882,1885, 1886, 1889 and some issues of 1890 and which is still available from the author.

Louis Taunton has published several other books.  He has also published similar columns about Choctaw and Webster Counties.
