100 and 75 Years Ago

November 4, 1904

Notice for Publication: Notice is hereby given that the following named settler, Arnold Taylor, has filed notice of his intention to make final proof in support of his claim, and that said proof will be made before the Circuit Clerk of Winston County at Louisville, Miss. He names the following witnesses to prove his continuous residence upon and cultivation of said land: Joe C. Car, Samuel H. Wallace, John B. Burroughs, William W. Giffin, all of Tampa, Miss.

The following friends have our thanks for recent remittances: V. E. Clearman, J. A. Hickman, J. M. Crowell, O. B. Fox, E. P. Palmer, L. Filer, J. C. Morehead, W. J. Fulcher, H. M. Breazeale, W. M. Warner and Ben McCully.

Mrs. L. F. Holberg, one of Macon’s most estimable ladies, with her children, and her sister, Miss Abbie Woodward, were pleasant guests at the home of her sister, Mrs. W. J. Newsom, last week.

We are glad to note that Mr. C. P. McWhorter, who has been confined to his bed for some time with fever, is much improved and hopes to be out again soon.

Our good friend Mr. N. D. Triplett was up one day this week looking as jovial as ever and said the would be in the heart of the city when Macon and Louisville meet.

Dr. and Mrs. Gunn returned from a trip to Hattiesburg last week, where they had been called by the illness of their daughter, Mrs. E. B. Caperton. Mrs. Caperton, we are glad to know is better.

P. W. Whitten of Staple, Texas, who is one of our most prompt patrons, makes us a nice remittance this week.

Mr. Thos. McGee of Plattsburg died a few days ago. Mr. McGee was more that eighty years of age and one of Winston’s best citizens. Neshoba Democrat.

All the lumber is on the ground for the Louisville depot and same will soon be erected. Indications are that we will get a pretty nice building.

Mr. W. P. Gillespie of Louisville, Miss., a former resident of this place, is visiting his children, Mrs. Dr. Tucker and Mrs. Mat Gray, this week. He will spend several days here and shaking hands with old friends and acquaintances. Ellisville News.

Miss Emmie Standard, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Standard died on October 2, 1904. Survivors include her parents, one sister and three brothers.

W. B. Carter made us a pleasant business call yesterday. Mr. Carter recently purchased the Forester plantation six miles west of town containing 700 acres and which is one of the best places in the county.

This book has material from the Winston Index, 1880 (list of over 500 Civil War Soldiers of Winston County who died from wounds, on the battlefield, or disease, or as POWs in Northern Prisons), and excerpts from The Winston Signal (newspaper before the present day Winston County Journal) for the years of 1883, 1890, 1891, 1892 and 1893.  It is indexed by surname. 

This publication follows his first volume that included excerpts from The Winston Signal for the years 1882,1885, 1886, 1889 and some issues of 1890 and which is still available from the author.

Louis Taunton has published several other books.  He has also published similar columns about Choctaw and Webster Counties.
