The new book, History of Winston County, Mississippi, was written in 1938 by Mrs. Jennie Newsom Hoffman as part of the WPA Program of recovery by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Mrs. Hoffman grew up in Louisville and was widely known throughout the county. Her father was editor for almost twenty years of the early newspapers, The Winston Index and The Winston Signal, and was long time Mayor of Louisville. Mrs. Hoffman's mother was of the pioneer family of Woodwards who settled in Winston County in its early days. In 1937-38 Mrs. Hoffman interviewed a diverse group of over five hundred residents of Winston County, which included everyone from ex-slaves, businessmen, veterans of the War Between the States, Spanish-American War and World War I, Choctaw Indians and everyday citizens. She also cited many records of the Chancery Court, Circuit Clerk, early newspapers, as well as many other sources. The manuscript of this book was typed for the Winston County Library Board in 1955 and only one copy has existed until now in the Genealogy Room of the library. The book consists of twenty chapters on numerous topics from formation of the county, antebellum days, the wars and war veterans, reconstruction, religion, education and the industry of the past and in 1938. Mrs. Hoffman included a chapter on the African American community and cited many references to early schools, churches and cemeteries of the that community. The book is spiral bound, contains over 800 endnotes, twelve pages of double-columned surname index and has 322 pages. This book has all the ingredients for pleasant reading by the fire on a cold winter day or night of by-gone days of Winston County. The book, Winston County, Mississippi Newspaper Excerpts from 1880 through 1893, has material from the Winston Index, 1880 (list of over 500 Civil War Soldiers of Winston County who died from wounds, on the battlefield, or disease, or as POWs in Northern Prisons), and excerpts from The Winston Signal (newspaper before the present day Winston County Journal) for the years of 1883, 1890, 1891, 1892 and 1893. It is indexed by surname. This publication follows his first volume that included excerpts from The Winston Signal for the years 1882,1885, 1886, 1889 and some issues of 1890 and which is still available from the author. These excerpts represent a glimpse into the daily lives of the people of Winston County (and some adjoining counties) in east central Mississippi. The newspapers convey information regarding births, marriages and deaths, as well as contain articles regarding the history of some of the county inhabitants and their families.
