is researching his ELLIS roots in Winston
County. He states that his great grandparents were Alfred ELLIS and Mary
CROSBY. Mary was, according to Mr. Ellis, Alfred's second wife and his
frist wife was Elizabeth Jane McGEE. At the present time he is
concentrating on finding out as much information as he can on Mary CROSBY,
Willard Theodore ELLIS, George M. ELLIS and Alfred's mother, Martha ????.
He would appreciate any information that anyone has to share on any of the
above mentioned people.
Jerome Parker, 25222 #8 East
Welches Road, Welches, Oregon 97067-9747, email: <parkerj@k-com.net>
who grew up in Louisville, graduated from LHS in 1953, is
researching several families of Winston County.
Jerome's father was Jodie PARKER and his grandparents were William Mathew
PARKER and Lynette Neely
CHERRY PARKER. The mother of William Mathew PARKER was Phebe SCOTT
PARKER, who was
possibly the daughter of David D. and R. Jane SCOTT, whom she was living with
in the 1880 census of
Winston County. Mr. Parker thinks that perhaps his grandmother, Lynette
Neely CHERRY, may have been the
daughter of Louisa F. CHERRY who married the second time to Isaac Leroy MASSEY
because Mr. MASSEY
signed as Lynette's guardian when she married William Mathew PARKER in 1897.
Any help from anyone
connected with any of these families would be appreciated by this
gentleman.
Jean Manning, 1140 Greymont
Avenue, A-12, Jackson, MS 39202, email: <mmanning@jam.rr.com>
wrote that her great grandfather, Alex McSWAIN (McSWEEN) appears in the Winston
County 1880 Census as Alex McSWAIN, age 70, born in North Carolina with wife,
Eunice A., age 40, born in Illinois. Their children were: Fanny Y.,
daughter, age 7, born in Ala. and James, son, age 6, born in Ala. Also, living
with them was
Elizabeth McFALL, age 74, mother-in-law, born in Massachusetts and both her
parents born in Mass. Mrs.
Manning has lots of information on Alex McSWEEN (the correct spelling), his CSA
records, land deeds, etc.
Alex fought the entire Civil War, walked back to Mississippi from
Appomattox. He lost everything in the War
and lived for a time in Shuqualak and in Grand Bay, Ala., but returned to
Mississippi by 1877. At the time of
his death in 1890, he was manager of the Louisville Poor House. Alex
McSWEEN was buried in the Old
Catholic Cemetery in Louisville which was later moved to Tucker in Neshoba
County. Alex's first wife, Emily,
died in 1858 in Kemper County. His property in the 1850s was 200 acres
adjoining Kellis property in the
1854 tax rolls of Kemper County. Alex paid gold for the property.
One of Alex's daughters, Ann and Elizabeth
(Eliza), according to Mrs. Manning's grandfather, James Alexander McSWEEN,
married a HOPPER from
DeKalb. Mrs. Manning is interested in finding this family and the name of
Mr. HOPPER. The other daughter
married a JENKINS, who was a traveling salesman for Marks-Rothenburg in
Meridian. Does anyone have any
JENKINS information? Mrs. Manning said that her grandfather, James
Alexander McSWEEN and his sister,
Frances Young McSWEEN, were educated by the nuns and Father Van Houver, the
priest at Louisville in the
1880s. She further related that her grandfather then went to Christian
Brothers College in Memphis at behest
of Father Van Houven and Father Ten Brink of Tucker. If anyone has
information to assist this good lady in
her research, please contact her.
Dana Speck, 5333 Albemarle,
Memphis, TN 38135, email: <dspeck@bellsouth.net>
is looking for information on David Draten WARNER born March 1830 in
South Carolina, the son of Jacob WARNER and Mary Martha METTS
(METZ). Dana is trying to find out any information about him, who he
married, any children, where he is buried. She has been looking for her
great-great grandfather who went by David Samuel WARNER giving his birthplace
as September 1829 in SC. She found him in the 1850 Census in Lafayette County,
MS living with a Charles WATSON and Living next to him was a Joseph WARNER and
A METTS family. She can find noththing on a David Samuel WARNER prior to
1850 and can find nothing on David Draten after 1840 living with his
father. Could David Samuel and David Draten be one and the same
person? The story has always been told in the family that David Samuel
left home at an early age and had changed his name. We know that our
David Samuel was buried in Woodruff County, Arkansas. The key to this
mystery could be solved if we could find out if David Draten is buried in
Winston County. If he is, then we would know that these two are not the same
person. Any information or help would be greatly appreciated.

John and Gayle Newman, 211
South Wells Avenue, Panama City Beach, FL 32413,
email: <beachbum@knology.net>
are currently seeking information on Gayle's
grandfather, James Abraham TUBB (born 17 Mar 1875), who sent to Amory, MS,
where his parents lived, leaving a wife and four daughters in Parish, AL,
during the Great Depression, to look for work after the coal mines in Walker
County, AL closed.
James Abraham TUBB then went to Louisville, MS in search of
work and lived with his sister's (Annie TUBBS SANDERS) family. During
this time frame, he died; they do
not know when, what from (possibly a heart attack) or where he is buried.
The Newmans think (and have made a trip to Louisville) that James Abraham TUBB
is buried next to his brother-in-law, Isaac SANDERS, in Masonic Cemetery in an
unmarked grave.
James Abraham TUBB's sister, Annie TUBB SANDERS and his
niece, Jettye SANDERS ANDERSON, are also buried there. Any
information and/or suggestions will be deeply appreciated.
Sandra Sharp, HCR 7, Box 20-26,
Ingram, Texas 78025, email: <sjsharp@hctc.net>
states that in 1830 William WHITEHEAD appears on the census in Lauderdale
County,
AL. as does his brother, Archibald, and William's son-in-law, James
WHITE. In 1834 William WHITEHEAD purchased 13 acres in Winston County,
MS. The next year James WHITE purchased 120 acres in Winston County.
William does not appear on the 1840 Census of Winston County. James WHITE
went on to become a large land owner in Winston and Noxubee Counties. The
only known children of William WHITEHEAD is Mary, born 4 Sept 1804 who married
James WHITE and CARROLL. Mary is buried in the WHITE Cemetery with James
and his second wife, Finnity GLENN. Did William WHITEHEAD die by
1840? Who are his other children? In 1840 there was an Abel
WHITEHEAD in Winston County, is he William's son or Archibald's son? Any help
with this family will be appreciated.
Fay Rouse, 8468 Blatchford Road,
Watervliet, MI 49098, email: <Quodon@aol.com>
needs help in finding where her great great grandfather and his wife are
buried. The names of her great great grandparents were Charles ARNETT, born in
Shelby County, AL on 4 Sept 1860 and is supposed to have died in Louisville,
Winston County, MS on 17 July 1941 and his wife was Lou Ganie CORDLE who is
supposed to have been born in Pinson, Jefferson County, AL. on 18 Jan 1862 and
died in Louisville, Winston County, MS on 30 Sept 1921. She has tried to
get a copy of their death records but never did get an answer. Mrs. Rouse
would appreciate any help on this family as she is a transplanted Rebel doing
research in Yankee land and there is not a lot on the South at her
location. Thanks for any help that anyone can give.
Rocky and Julie McCool, 5021
Vanderpool Ct., Ft. Lewis, WA 93433, email: <JAMcool13@aol.com>
arelooking for information on Winston County McCOOL families. James William
McCOOL married first Bettie TAYLOR on 22 Dec 1887 and then Eugenia (Genie)
RODGERS on 13
April 1902. James and Betty had the following children on the 1900 Winston
County Census:
Estella, Christopher, Sallie, Herbert, and Lester.
Rocky is descended from Herbert (William Herbert). He is very interested
in meeting descendants of the other children of the above mentioned
couple. James and Eugenia
(his second wife) had two more daughters, Veria and Leda ??. Stella (Lela
Estella) married J. T.
COCKRELL and the McCools believe that Christopher is on the 1920 Census married
to a Minnie with children: Dorris, James D., and Theo. James William
McCOOL was supposedly born in MS with at least one of his parents from AL. The
McCools are waiting on marriage lines to help them with their ancestors.
They are very interested in any information that anyone would
share and urge relatives to contact them.
Dortha McElroy Greenlee, 909
Harrison Avenue, Abilene, TX 79601-4607 email: <Dgreen909h@cs.com>
states that their connection to Winston County is her husband's great
grandmother was Eliza Winnifred SCOGGIN, born 23 May 1840 in Winston
County. She was the daughter of William Harvey SCOGGIN and Mary Ann
STEPHENS YOUNG. Eliza married David Jasper Newton GREENLEE on 2 Sept 1855
in Enterprise, MS. The family has referred to him as DJN, but Mrs.
Greenlee believes he was called Jasper.
The children of Eliza and Jasper GREENLEE were: Mary Catharine, born
1858; Laura Lavine, born 1861;
James William, born 1863; Eliza Alice, born 1866; and David Clarence, born 1871
in Newton County, MS.
All of the children were born in MS, except James, and he was born in Ala. DJN
GREENLEE died in 1875
and is bured at Hickory, MS, Newton County. By the new century all of
Eliza's family (she and her children)
moved to TX, with the exception of Mary Catharine. She and her
husband, James William FOREMAN,
married in 1885, chose to stay in MS. My husband's grandfather was David
Clarence GREENLEE. He
settled with his wife and small son, his mother and brother, Jim, in Stephens
County, TX.
Mrs. Greenlee would like to exchange information on this family.
Linda Griffith, 13976 Monte Del
Oro, Castroville, CA 95012, email <GRIFFLK@aol.com>
is looking for information on Amzi ROBINSON who worked at the Mayhew School and
married
Emily FOLSOM.
Michael K. Hendrix, 4808
Crepe Myrtle Lane, Pasadena, TX 77505, email
<mhendrix@worldnet.att.net>
would like to find out more about the ancestry of his great-great-grandfather,
Henry Louis HENDRIX (born
24 Dec 1822 in Giles County, TN and died 30 Sept 1907 in Limestone County,
Texas; buried at Old Tidwell
Cemetey, Thornton, TX) who married Mary Edna McGEE (daughter of John McGEE and
Edna FIELDS) in
Winston County, MS on 9 Dec 1847. Mr. Hendrix believes the father of
Henry Louis was John HENDRIX
(possibly born in SC before 1800) who lived in Pickens County, Ala. from 1825
to about 1845 and who may
have died in Winston County sometime before 1850. Henry had a brother,
James H. HENDRIX who married
Elizabeth GARNER in Winston County on 30 Sep 1846 and possibly a sister, Jane
HENDRIX, who married
Thomas C. WOOSLEY/MOOSLEY in Winston County on 4 June 1849. It's probablethat
these HENDRIX's
were related to Henry C. L. HENDRIX of Winston County (son of James HENDRIX and
Jane McGILL, early
settlers of Tuscaloosa County, AL). However, Mr. Hendrix has not been
able to determine this as yet. It is
also clear that there was a close (if not blood) relationship with Rev. David
J. TIDWELL (born 1802, Fairfield
County, SC, married Sevilla RUSSELL; son of Isaac TIDWELL and Elizabeth
RACKLEY), since he married
both Henry L. HENDRIX in 1847 in Winston County, MS and George Washington
HENDRIX (Henry's son and Mr. Hendrix's great grandfather) in 1882 in Limestone
County, TX. Mr. Hendrix would very much like to hear from anyone having
information concerning these families.
Christine Infante, 2341
Underwood Blvd., Houston, TX 77030 email: <chrismac_36@yahoo.com>
is researching the family of C. J. DLATON/DAULTON. She thinks that the J.
in his name might be Jackson.
The family consisted of C. J. DALTON, his wife, Mary, and their children: Mary
Elizabeth, James Benjamin,
and Andrew J. The daughter, Mary, had a child named Henry born around
1874. This family lived in Winston
County in 1880 and before that in Oktibbeha County. C. J. was from North
Carolina and fought in Company D,
37th MS Infantry and died from injuries received at Vicksburg in 1863.
Mary moved with her son, Ben, to
Texas in the early 1890s. James Benjamin married Abigail Eugenia DAWSON
also from Winston County.
Mrs. Infante would love to know more about C. J. DALTON and also about his
wife, Mary, whose maiden name was JOHNSTON.
Lanita Sconce Miller,
3117 South Wichita, Wichita, KS 67217, email: <ozarkn@southwind.net>
Searching in Winston and Noxubee Counties for theparentage of three boys:
Elias "Eli" DETHROW (born 1825-26); David DOTHEROW (born 1825 - settled in
Noxubee County); and
Joseph C. DETHERO/DETHERROW (born 1821 and settled in Winston County for a
while). All three were products of their father's first marriage.
When their mother died (drown in a boating/raft accident, after 1826 and before
1840), the father remarried. When the father died, the stepmother sent the boys
away because she had children from her marriage to this same father.
Mrs. Miller is also searching for three DETHROW children born to Eliza A. S.
ALSUP DETHROW and
Eli DETHROW. The children got separated from their father after 1860 when
their mother died in 1859 in Calhoun County, MS. Their names were:
Susan (born 1852); Mary A. (born 1849); and Thomas (born 1853); all were born
in either Calhoun or Yalobusha Counties, MS. Last name could be spelled
DETHERO or as many as 50 different ways. The children may also have been
sent to be raised by the ALSUPS, and their last name may have been changed to
ALSUP. She is also searching for any descendants of Joseph C. DETHERROW (born
1820) who married Mary JOHNSON on 29 Dec 1841 in Winston County. Mary
died in childbirth, and his second marriage was to Sarah McCRACKIN in 1850 in
Winston County. She is looking for his descendants, as well as his final
resting place or any information on his death.
Jim Huffman, 1230 Stemwood
Drive, Picayune, MS 39466,email <huffman@ametro.net>
is looking for photos of Henry James GULLY (of "Bloody Kemper" fame) other than
the one published in the recent Kemper County history book, which is presumed
to be H. J. GULLY, but is not substantiated.
Mr. Huffman knows because he is the one who originally found the picture! Henry
died in Louisville in 1913 and is his GGG-Grandfather. Mr. Huffman is also ten
years into researching the 43rd MS Infantry (in which H. J. GULLY was a
captain) for a regimental history. He believes several vets of Company K
from Kemper County moved to Winston County, as did Henry. Any letter,
diary, or photographic material retlated to these 43rd MS vets would be greatly
appreciated. <www.43rdmississippi.homestead.com/index.html>
is the web site for the 43rd MS and Mr. Huffman will be willing to answer any
questions that he can about this regiment and its soldiers.
Gary Aikens, 203 Channing Trail,
Warner Robbins, GA 31088, email <gaikens1@home.com> is looking for any
information about the AIKENS family. He wants to know if anyone knows the
history of the parents of
John Howard AIKENS (born 28 June 1850 and died 19 July 1932). John Howard
AIKENS married
Martha (Mattie) CHANDLER HAYNES on 3 March 1880 in Winston County. Mr Aikens
wonders if there are any cousins who may know interesting facts about the
AIKENS or HAYNES families.
Lisa Stark, Route 3, Box
166A-1, Pauls Valley, OK 73075 email, <starky@brightok.net>
is seeking information about her GG-Grandmother, Frances (Fannie) WEIR BARRON,
born about 1824-26. She would like to know anything about Fannie's family
and what happened to them. Fannie married Almon BARRON in Winston County in
1847, he died in 1863 after Vicksburg. Fannie had to sell their farm in 1866
and Mrs. Stark then loses track of Fannie after that. She wonders what
happened to Fannie and all her children
after 1866 and where did they do and how did they get by?
Billie Michelli, 4666 Lake
Lawford Court, Baton Rouge, LA 70816, email <billievenure@home.com>
relates that two sons of Clarissa LeFLEUR WILSON and John James WILSON were
accused of trying to kill Alfred LEECH (their mother's new husband) after the
death of their father. This happened in Winston County in the
1830s. Any information on this family would be greatly appreciated.
